Best Weekend Ever!

On Saturday, we celebrated the marriage of my nephew and his wife with an at home reception at my Mom's house. It was such a great afternoon..everything was perfect!

My niece made mexican wedding cakes for favors and a photo album guest book. I found a vintage magazine stand that was perfect for cards from the guests.

The mexicana theme was carried throughout with brightly covered table linens and even a special little cactus arrangement on the couple's table.

She's not the most attractive mannequin hat display, but once I picked her up, I just couldn't put her down. Something about her..I loved. Found her today at a local thrift shop. Not too bad for a Sunday pick!

Flocked burnt sienna with a heavy chrome base..very mod. The color is growing on me, but as Jenna held her in her lap on the way home, she asked what I would have paid had she been turquoise. That's a good question! Now we're trying to come up with a name for her since we always name our mannequins. :) Any suggestions? All we have so far is Greta.

This old house was the home I spent my first year in. A few old black & whites are the only memories I have, but I've lived right next door to it my entire life! Strange, isn't it? Our neighbor's home is coming along nicely, and I'm so excited for them. This week they've been working on the addition of a turret. It gives the house a totally different look! I can hardly wait to see the interior when it's done. I have been tempted to peek inside, but have kept away from the windows!

What I Couldn't Leave Behind...

at The Rose Bowl flea market.

An old ghosted vanity mirror with etched flowers and pretty glass bottles.

When I asked how much for the mirror tray, his answer surprised me. "Five bucks because I'm tired of looking at it", he replied. I cannot imagine EVER tiring of looking at this sweet thing!

The Bottle Man is always there and I can never pass his table of color without bringing a few home, but I wish now that I had picked up more. He told me how he leaves them on his roof to get these beautiful shade of purple. The aqua seemed to be the popular color that day, although many were buying clear iridescent ones.

This tall pair stands 36 " and were brought over from France by the seller. They originally had glass flowers on some of the metal tips, but they were removed. Can you hear me scream? I have no idea why someone would remove those, but if they were still on there, the price would have been higher than I could have paid. As soon as I saw them, I thought - Jewelry Trees!!! Yes...someday they will hold necklaces.

Found in the very last row, this is something I had always wanted but never really came across. A vintage Simplicity Model Mannequin. She's only 12" tall and she doesn't have her original clothing, but I'll cherish her all the same. She's chippy, but I don't mind one bit! She's just a sweet memory from the Rose Bowl trip.

Pretty embossed metal goblets. These things are so heavy, unmarked , but they cleaned up well. Not even sure what I'll do with them..just had to snag them! Could they be for the bride & groom? I may add them to the website....still debating. Lugged home a few more things which I forgot to photograph!

when we found this at a recent thrift store outing. And I say we because I actually pulled it off the rack as she simultaneously snatched it out of my grasp! It is in near perfect condition. A beauty to behold! The really strange thing is, she found one of these on eTsy a few months earlier, and when she decided to buy it, it had already been sold. Same color, same style, identical. I couldn't believe it.

A 1930's tunic with the sweetest embroidered flowers, lace and silk ribbon ties. It now hangs as a piece of art on her wall. When I asked her if she was going to sell it, she gave me the evil glare. I took that as a NO. lol

What's Hot, What's Not

After my recent visit to the flea market, I took notes on what I saw people leaving with and what seemed to be selling in general. Here's what I saw in baskets, on dollies and under arms.

This sign received so much attention and was snapped up right after I took the photo.

Industrial- Wire locker baskets, stools, signage, dress forms, small metal file drawers and large carts sold as entertainment centers.

This draftsman stool is similar to the ones that seemed popular that day.

Mid-Century Modern Home Furnishings

Vintage suitcases from the 40's to the 60's: From the striped to floral to the mod orange & pink.

Vintage clothing...probably THE most popular selling item with the 18-30 year olds.

Farm Primitives- Tractor seats, Tools & sun shape disks and gears. The creative ones will take their parts and may come up with something like this!

Also saw lots of architectural pieces, wooden crates, boxes and printer drawers being sold.

I love this printer drawer turned jewelry display.

Bird cages, vintage colored glass bottles, vintage jewelry and unusual lucite chandeliers...all the rage.

What people seemed to be passing by- Depression glassware, pretty china, dishes, figurines, linens and newly painted furniture.

Funny how things that were once popular are now passed over but that's the way it's always been I guess. It also seemed that there were many more younger shoppers out...or am I just getting old? Don't answer that! These younger buyers seemed to be drawn to what Mom might have had used in the 60's & 70's..not what their Grandmother had in the 40's-50's. Although I did see 2 young men buying a primitive folding washstand that didn't even have the galvanized tubs. I think I overheard some talk about turning it into a coffee table. You would have thought they found gold they were so excited! I remember a few years ago, no one would look twice at one in an antique mall. I also remember previewing an estate sale 10 years ago at a home that was completely furnished with 1950-60 furniture. I left without purchasing a thing because it wasn't what I was looking for. I would give anything to turn back the clock on that one! I think they even left the plastic on one of the sofas.

My next post will be my flea market purchases.

Rose Bowl Fun

A trip to The Rose Bowl in Pasadena is always fun, but also very tiring. Five hours of walking and we still didn't see it all! We came home with some goodies so I can't complain too much. Here are some things that I would have LOVED to bring home, but didn't.

This piece would be the ultimate DREAM piece for a shop. I think I would make it into a counter and hang the mirror on the wall behind it..AMAZING, but it was out of my price range and I wouldn't have a spot for it right now...so I'll just have to DREAM about it.

When my daughter saw this, she swore it would fit in the back of the car, but I think that would have meant one of us would have to stay in Pasadena. It was probably the prettiest little dresser I've ever seen.

This was awesome. The stand had a foot pedal which would raise & lower the mannequin. We both wanted this too, but it was $650.

And then...there's always the strange. This chair received lots of looks.

Industrial seems too have taken over. Every aisle had something industrial and this space had quite a selection of entertainment stands. This was just one. Industrial items were THE hottest items selling today.

If we had a need for bar stools, I would have somehow tied these to the roof of the car. :)

I have a weakness for children's furniture and this little pink set was adorable.

I have never see so many grain sacks in one space!

Having a child turning 21 makes one stop and think. It really doesn't seem like yesterday that she was taking her first steps, but time does seem to pass much quicker the older I get. Love my girl for so many reasons. She's strong, intelligent, independent and definitely has a mind of her own. She has had a few curve balls thrown her way at a young age, and I'm proud of the way she has handled herself. She's a homebody, and I have the feeling she'll be around for awhile. And I'm okay with that. We're two peas in a pod..going junking together every chance we get. Yes, she inherited the collecting gene and was recently bitten with the entrepreneur bug. Selling on eTsy has been an exciting new adventure for her. I'm just a wee bit proud that she has an eye for finding clothing and accessories to list in her online eTsy store. She even sold this beautiful Italian Maxi dress last week to an actress in LA..she was so excited and I was so happy for her :) So hard for her to let go of some pieces like this, but she's learning that this is the the way it is when you are a finder and not a keeper. Although on peek in her closet and I'm beginning to wonder..

So for her 21st birthday, she doesn't want much. Just a trip to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena to do some treasure hunting. Wish us luck! But first, it's out to lunch and dinner on Saturday for that very first celebratory drink. I'm sure she'll proudly display that I.D. when asked.

It's Coming Along...

Last year, I posted about this old house which is next door to our home. Well..my wish came true. Not my first wish to OWN this baby... but my wish that someone would buy it and restore it.

They have been working on it for months, but it will be a few more months before it's ready for the new owners. They have removed the chain link fencing and replaced it with iron and brick. I can't wait to see it completed! It's going to be so wonderful to look next door and see her in all her glory!

3 Good Reasons

We didn't go looking for a settee...

but when you come across something as CUTE as this, how can two girls resist?

And besides...she gave me 3 good reasons to buy it.

#1 It's her birthday next month, and this can be...her birthday present! :)
#2 She's tired of sitting on her bed to read and to watch television.
#3 It's just so darn adorable and we'd surely never find another in this color.

A Mini Vacation

I just can't let an entire month slip by without a post! As many of my close friends know, I post fairly often at my shop blog, so it leaves little time for this one...and I miss it! The New Year is going well..we've had some amazing weather and with the birds singing outside my window, it feels like Spring. Sorry to those in freezing temps! :(

I wish I could say I've been vacationing on some faraway exotic island, but that's not the case! I don't even remember the last vacation I had, but I think it was when our daughter was 4 or 5..and she's almost 21 now. Yikes! I feel OLD and deprived! lol... I think my News Year resolution will be to plan a vacation. I do travel over this bridge at least 4 days a week to my shop on Coronado Island. I guess I can say it's " a mini vacation." Once I get off the bridge and hit land, I travel about 6 blocks to the left to reach my destination. If you are ever in San Diego, head over the bridge. There is a lot to see and a beautiful beach to enjoy.

Ho Ho Ho! It's Me, Silly

I love this old papier mache Santa face and we have had a holiday tradition the last 8 years. It involves the Santa mask, me, and everyone's favorite pug, Ms. Sophie.

Each year, Santa makes his first appearance outside our family room window after we put up our tree. He,(that would be ME) knocks on the window and up pops the Santa head yelling Ho-Ho-Ho!

Our pug, Ms. Sophie, barks and runs around the sofa. It's all in fun..no animals are harmed during these fun & games. When I come inside, she wags her tail an all is forgotten..until I say Ho-Ho-Ho again...lol We have to hide him in the closet. She won't let up until he's out of sight!

I think this little ritual stems from an experience I had during my childhood. When I was around 5 or 6 years of age, my parents had one of these Santa masks. My brother or Father (I think they took turns) would go outside and pop the Santa head up in our kitchen window. My Mom would say that we need to get to bed because Santa is checking to see if we are asleep. Good times!

So we are in the home stretch with only a few days of shopping left! I took the easy route this year and purchased gift cards and a popular item from the shop. Hope everyone has the merriest of holidays...see you next year!

Jenna has been wanting another fish since she lost her last one of 5 years. I never knew the lifespan of Beta fish until Simon lived past the 5 year mark. Our new friend's name is Bjorn and he seems to be enjoying his mermaid friend that I used in my childhood fish tank.

We knew this day was coming...

Out with the OLD, and in with the NEW.

The city removed all of the original old lamp posts and replaced them with new.

This is the street light removed right in front of our store.
We asked where they were taking them but didn't get a clear answer.

Out with the awesome old glass globes on graceful iron lamp posts.
Make room for plastic globes. Yep..plastic.

I'm sure most people will never even notice the change,
but I will miss the character and beauty of the old ones. Such is progress. The city received 9 bids for the Street Light Replacement and they went with the lowest bid which was $897,064.00.

The Urban Barn Grand Opening

and it was truly Grand!

Today was the Grand Opening of a magical place in Escondido, Ca. I have been waiting for this day! The Urban Barn was once an automotive garage with roll up doors, high ceilings and chains, perfect to hang chandeliers. The mix of the rustic, chic and industrial was truly magical. Sparkler Fun*

I found a large vintage box of 1950's sparklers when Jenna was just a wee one, and every year we have opened just one little carton of 6. I can't believe they still light. The original price on the box said $2 per box or 15 cents per carton. The box reads "Harmless" For Indoor and Outdoor Illumination. Directions : Hold in Hand -Light Silver End.

I'll think we'll stick to outdoor use....

Just a quick blog post here..it had been so long since I logged into this blog, that Mr.Google asked me, "Forgot Your Password?" Chalk it up to getting old. I guess I will have to start writing these things down. :(

Not much new..working at my shop which has kept us all very busy. We are having a great summer..the economy has taken a turn for the better. . finally! Thankfully, our shop is in a tourist destination with near perfect weather, so many of our customers come from all over the U.S and abroad, for a little R&R and to escape the heat. (above photos are from the shop)

I did manage to find some time to add new items to the website..this doesn't happen as often as I would like, but anyone who runs an online store knows can relate. :)

Having a store...

...a real brick and mortar... can be very time consuming, but at the same time, very rewarding. And I thought keeping a website, 2 blogs and a facebook updated was hard! Lol.. I'm not complaining though...I LOVE the shop...sometimes too much I think. It takes time and energy to keep the store fluffed and stocked with an interesting mix of uncommon finds, but that is what sets you apart from the next shop. I was at the store all day yesterday..10 hours. A long day, but a great one. We made a lot of new friends that will be returning to visit, and we also gained a couple of "fur fans".

Meet Skylos! (Greek for Dog) He kept peeking behind the check out to see what was going on back there! He would make a great little shop dog.

Napoleon was all smiles. ( His Dad is a history buff.)

I love it when people ask if they can bring there dogs in...Hey, if you don't bring them in, I will be running outside to pet them! The word on the street is that these doggies are better behaved than some children. *wink*

After closing, I was doing paperwork and decided to relax by shutting off most of the lighting except for a few chandeliers. I looked around taking it all in, and for a split second, time stood still and I forgot that I had been there for 10 hours! I guess it's true love. :)

That is was...she wore it on her 17th birthday wearing a tiara and Ms. Sophie by her side. Now it's time for someone else to enjoy this beautiful vintage party dress!

Jenna has been downsizing her vintage closet and this was her absolute favorite dress. It has been the one dress she has hung onto the longest...and I understand why. A Trip To The Groves...

Last weekend I attended the Olivenhain Grove Sale in Encinitas with The Attic Girls! We had a great day filled with shopping & lunch. We walked away feeling so inspired! I wanted everything, but decided on these two items. This old green urn was the first piece I picked up and as soon as I did, I knew it was mine. I couldn't wait to get it home and fill it with seashells.

This cast iron urn weighed a ton so I left it while I continued shopping. I purchased the urn from Gail, who put on a great show in The Grove! Visit her blog Casual Loves Elegance by clicking HERE.

Imagine Finding This....

at your local Goodwill. Just this week, a retired jeweler was sorting through items donated to a Goodwill in PA when he spotted a 2.6 carat diamond and platinum ring. The ring was appraised at 17,600! The ring has a two-carat European-cut diamond, surrounded 14 smaller diamonds.
Goodwill official aren't sure why the ring was donated or who donated it.

My guess is that it came in from someone cleaning out an estate. They probably tossed the entire box of costume jewelry, thinking it was all junk jewelry, in a bag to be donated They may have looked at the size of that diamond and thought that it couldn't possibly be REAL! It's not uncommon to find 14K jewelry mixed with costume, but I've never found anything this valuable. My shop partner once bought a bag of mixed costume jewelry and there were 2 Tiffany heart bracelets inside the mix. That was unexpected and a nice surprise!

Repurposed Jewelry Displays

Displaying jewelry in an interesting way, can really generate a second look! Here are a few of my favorite displays around the shop.

Kandi made this pretty jewelry display for the shop from an old frame we had laying around the shop. This is an inexpensive and easy project to take on. All you need is an empty frame, fabric, foam board and a staple gun. I found the fabric remnant at the thrift store for a dollar, the frame was an estate sale find and the poster board was purchased new. Just add long pearl bead pins to hang your necklaces on. I don't think the entire project cost more than $10!

Pictured below is another one that we had made when we first opened. This one was a bit more involved as we had a shadow box behind the frame so we would have a shelf to sit bracelets on.

A vintage decorative scale has perfect arms for displaying necklaces.

This old pottery vase looks like it was just made to hold this pretty layered chain bracelet.

Old silver loving cups can show off a display of cuffs with style.

Don't throw out that old screen! We have a collection of bird necklaces on this one. We added some simple white cup hooks across the top to hold the necklaces. You can also slip earrings right through the screen.

This once held money in an old cash register...
now it's filled with beans and rings!

Taking The Etsy Plunge

Daughter is gearing up to open an eTsy shop with her vintage dresses, shoes and handbags. There's no more room in the closet, so something has to go! Each time she tries on one of her vintage dresses, she walks out to show me and asks the same question. "Should I sell it??" Anyone out there who collects, can relate. It's so hard to let go of the things we love, even though we don't have the space or need for them any longer.

She purchased a tripod so she can take her own photos. The older she gets, the more she hates for me to photograph her. I'm still posting this one..she never reads my blog. :)

A Phone Call From A Friend

I have known her for years..she was one of my first customers on eBay back in 2000. We spoke by telephone for the very first time the other day..why did we wait so long Barbara! I'm sure we were on the phone for at least an hour..chatting about old times all the way from CT. We reminisced about things she had purchased from me, about the reason she purchased a pretty milk glass bowl from me. My description drew her in..."imagine it piled high with fluffy mashed potatoes"...hahaha we had a good laugh out of that one. Did I really write that?!! She recalled a rose garden that my husband planted for me , abut the time he was going through treatment for cancer. Just so many little things she remembered, and it made me smile to be reminded of them!

We chatted about so many things...we both have daughters who are close in age. Her's, ready to spread her wings to begin college soon. As we were talking, it felt like we knew so much about each other, with only an online friendship! I demanded that she come out for a visit and I would spend a week as her tour guide to all of the hot shopping spots in Southern Calif. She plans to, maybe next year, and I can't wait to meet her in person!

She purchased the pair of chairs pictured above from my store recently and we shipped them to her. Barb is married to one of those nice guys who doesn't bat an eye seeing 2 pink chairs rolled into the house. :) We are lucky gals, in more ways than one, right Barb?

I Wanted It ALL

I was visiting my favorite thrift store a few weeks back, when I turned the corner and saw this....NOT 1, but 2 dining tables with 10 chairs, 2 chaise lounges, 2 side chairs, a love seat, 2 side tables...my heart went into overdrive.

And then I saw the price. At least they priced things separately, but how in the world could I choose just ONE thing?!! I wanted it all, but I wound up leaving it all. I know..some of you out there who are reading this must think that I fainted and hit my head, but the prices were out of my range. Not that it wasn't worth their asking price! This stuff was HEAVY, the good old iron with the original aqua paint and look at that fruity design! The table with 4 chairs that I really wanted was $350 and there was no glass top. The larger table and 6 chairs had glass and was much higher. If I had a large patio with pool, I would have sold my left kidney to buy it, but I don't, so I just stood there in a trance for what seemed like 30 minutes. The worker offered me a better price but I had to TAKE IT ALL. So instead of taking it all, I took the photos, went home and dreamed about that set. I could not get it out of my mind. Went back the next morning and POOF! It was all gone...just like that, sold to one person. I can just imagine this set on the patio of a 1920's Spanish mansion... I guess it wasn't meant to be for me!

I Can Hardly Believe It...

We don't have a teenager anymore..Jenna turned 20 today. I took this photo of her last August with her baby girl, Ms. Sophie, given to her for her 10th birthday. BEST birthday present EVER! :) I was surprised and a bit embarrassed to discover that this is the latest picture I have of Jenna. I guess that's what happens when we get so busy with work, school, life..time just gets away from us, doesn't it? That and the fact that she really does avoid getting her picture taken. I do love this one though because at the time, she didn't even know I was taking it.

Together, we prepared french toast for her birthday breakfast with to die for Dudley's Louisiana Pecan Maple bread, fresh mango and banana slices. We'll be going out to dinner at our favorite Thai restaurant, Swaddee in Coronado. My friend Tasna is the owner and does a lot of the cooking. If you are ever in Coronado, I highly recommend it!

Jenna wanted to make her own birthday dessert...this sinful treat: Chocolate Caramel Tart I'll let you know how it is..after I come out of my sugar coma.

I've experienced numerous earthquakes in my lifetime, but never one quite as long as today's quake. After about 20 seconds of being inside the house, I decided to make a move outside. It seemed to last forever, although it was over in less than a minute. Most of the quakes I have felt are a little more jerky..this one seemed to come in waves, which made me feel quite tipsy! Several after shocks are still going on within the last hour, but thankfully, no damage here..just a few hairline cracks in the stucco.
I found this video on You tube tonight. These guys didn't even wait but a few seconds after it ended before getting their drinks..I just found it funny. :)

The Miracle Of Food Processing

(My daughter sent this to me today and I just about fell off my chair laughing...I hope it makes you laugh, and maybe think twice before you reach for one of those famous cookies! LOL)

Once upon a time... some brave scientists had a noble dream of ridding our food of the plague of nutrients.

Today, at the start of the 21st century, the miracle of food processing has brought that dream closer to reality than ever before. From vitamin-free "blueberry bits" to spray-can cheese to avocado-free guacamole, food scientists have worked tirelessly to bring us new and exciting foods that contain as little nutrition as possible. Even apparently "healthy" foods such as soups have been ingeniously overloaded with so much salt you feel as if you’re eating French fries.

In this article, we’ll provide a handy guide to six uniquely unnatural processed foods that will hopefully serve as a blueprint for humanity’s eventual triumph over the tyrannical fist of Mother Nature.

Spray-Can 'Easy Cheese'

Dipping a butter knife into a tub of cheese spread and putting it on a cracker takes a lot of time and effort. Thankfully for all of us, the wizards at Kraft have developed a product that ensures we’ll never again run the risk of hurting our wrists trying to spread processed cheese. Kraft’s Easy Cheese cans combine the soulless tastelessness of its cheese products with the convenience and simplicity of whipped cream cans.

The most interesting aspect of Easy Cheese is its remarkable consistency. Normally, cheese comes in a solid state when kept at room temperature and only becomes liquid when melted at high temperatures. Easy Cheese, on the other hand, has a Goldilocks-like "not too solid, not too viscous" quality that makes it easy to spread on food without having it drip on your clothing.

According to an exposé in Wired magazine, Easy Cheese achieves this amazing texture by containing lots of unhealthy crap, such as the stain-removing chemical trisodium phosphate and a healthy dose of canola oil that keeps the cheese from solidifying. Oh, and they also load Easy Cheese with about twice the amount of salt you'd normally find in natural cheddar cheese.

But the best ingredient in Easy Cheese is calcium phosphate, which is used as a calcium supplement. "But wait," you say. "Why does a cheese product need calcium added artificially?" Well, as Wired speculates, the sodium phosphate could actually negate the calcium in the natural cheese. Thus, Kraft had to put in an additive that would make up for the calcium that's taken away through food processing. Genius!

2. Oreo Cookie Death Filling

It’s rare to encounter a food that makes you say, "If only this were as healthy as frosting!" And yet, the filling in Oreo cookies manages to accomplish just that.

You see, typical frosting is made mostly from butter, milk, sugar and vanilla extract. No one will ever accuse it of being good for you, but at least you're eating fairly natural fats. Oreo stuffing, on the other hand, is basically sugar-flavored Crisco. Seriously, that’s what you’re consuming when you eat an Oreo.

Oreos' death filling is so bad it even inspired an ill-fated lawsuit in California a few years back that tried to stop the sale of Oreos to children. While the suit was eventually dropped, it did introduce trans fats to the public consciousness and helped spearhead the campaign to make food companies indicate on their labels whether their products contained any trans fats, so it wasn’t a total waste.

That said, I think the best way to stop people from eating Oreos wouldn’t be to ban them outright but to force Kraft to rebrand them to reflect their actual ingredients. So let’s say you mandate that Kraft label its cookies "Criscoroes" and have the package depict a kid gorging himself in a tub of vegetable shortening. Yum!

3. Condensed Soups

Ah, soup. It’s the food mom used to feed us when we were sick. Every child has fond memories of being nursed back to health by sipping at the warm, nutritious broth of chicken noodle soup. Of course, mom probably didn’t realize at the time that she was setting you up for a future of high blood pressure and kidney failure. Because if she fed you condensed soup from a can, she was loading your young body up with insanely high amounts of sodium.

How insanely high, you ask? Well, consider that a mere half-cup of Campbell’s Vegetable Soup contains a heart-stopping 890 mg of sodium, or roughly 37 percent of your daily recommended sodium intake. But wait, there’s more! The typical Campbell’s soup can contains one-and-a-half cups of soup, meaning that one can of soup contains more than 90 percent of your daily recommended sodium intake.

To be fair to Campbell’s, it does have a "Healthy Request" brand of soup that contains roughly half the salt of Campbell's other soups. Still, one of soup’s supposed key virtues is that it isn’t a cheeseburger. In other words, when you buy a bowl of soup you shouldn’t have to "request" a healthy version of it.

4. Spam

Spam was really a major miracle of food science, as it solved a mystery that humanity had been trying for centuries to figure out: namely, how to make meat-flavored Jell-O. Developed in the 1930s, Spam is derived primarily from pork shoulder meat (seriously) and combined with water, sugar, sodium nitrate (of course) and copious amounts of salt. The result is a meat-like goo that derives 80 percent of its calories from fat and that delivers a whopping 790 mg of sodium per two-ounce serving.

February 26th!?? Has it really been that long since my last post? I was doing so well there for awhile, but lately, I don't even have much time to clean my floors, let alone blog. I know many of you bloggers reading this, know exactly what I'm talkin' about! I do have another blog, which I have been updating more frequently, and also spending way more time at the shop than I usually do. We are busy and I guess you could say that's a GOOD thing when you are in retail!

So for those of you who have asked when I will have new items listed on the web site..I should have a few goodies up by Friday evening. A huge thank you to customers, both past and new. We truly appreciate your support.

Our San Diego weather has been picture perfect the past few days, so if you've been thinking about that little road trip to San Diego..now is the time! It was in the 80's today..a little too warm for my taste, but I'm not complaining. We live in a beautiful city!

The Old Grey House

Last April, I posted about our neighbor's house, which reminds me so much of the famous Grey Gardens. The owner recently passed on, the daughter will be moving, and the house will be going up for sale shortly. How I would love to have a house like this, but it would take more time and money than I have. Only half of the house has electricity, the front porch is a goner, as is the upper balcony. As you can see, the exterior has been neglected.

The weeds and shrubs have taken over the garden, but if you look closely you can still find the beauty. There really is something magical about this house.

There are so many of these old porch columns, that I forgot to count. I just hope that whoever buys the house, has plans to restore it. If not, I want the columns!

The formal living room has a fireplace and piano to the right.

I was asked to come over last weekend, as the daughter is trying to sell some of the items that they have no use for. They are keeping many wonderful things to remember their mother by, but it's impossible to keep it all. There was so much. As I walked into the dining room, there were things piled on the table and buffet. The kitchen cupboards were filled with Jewel Tea dishes, depression glass, carnival glass and more. My head was spinning and I didn't know where to start.

I love this stairway and railing, the high ceilings and windows trimmed in the old wood. I know these are common place in many parts of the U.S., but not so common where I live. I could have stood there for an hour taking it all in.

I actually lived in this house from birth to around 1 1/2 yrs of age, since we moved before my 2nd birthday. It would have been a wonderful house to grow up in and raise a big family. Not one, but two "hiding spots" under the stairwell. The only memory I have from living here are a few old photographs of me in a bassinet on top of a table, and on a swing in the back yard. Oh, and the story about me falling out of my bassinet onto the kitchen floor. Ouch.

Keeping my fingers crossed that this old house will live on.

Crazy Weather...

Like many other San Diegan's, I was awakened by strong winds and rain early this morning. So as I listened to the wind howl, like I have never heard it howl before, I decided to experience this baby first hand. 50-55 MPH winds are not something we get here very often...ya only live once! It seems the worst is over after tonight. I prefer staying home during storms, so I've been putting in some hours on the website. Look for new arrivals by tomorrow evening. It's That Time Of Year...Go Bolts!

The Chargers have a big game on Sunday, and when the home team is in the running, you can bet my husband will be showing his home team spirit! He was missing for a few hours last night, and when he came in to ask me to come outside to see what he had been up to...well, I was speechless. I had to run back in and get my camera.

When we arrived home this evening, dear daughter looks over at the gate and with a roll of the eyes, announces that she won't be having any friends over until this comes down...LOL.

A Very Anthropologie & Martha Christmas

I'm a little late with the post-Christmas post, but we had a wonderful Christmas. Martha's brightly colored mixing bowls, recipe box, cutting board and gadgets were a few things on her Christmas wish list.

Leave it to Martha to design a set of Melamine bowls that look this good.

She really needs to get a job there. Seriously.

Jenna made the raspberry cheesecake for our Christmas Eve dinner and bags of home made cookies to hand out for gifts. My baby girl is all grown up.
We had a very nice celebration with family..hope yours was memorable too! The day after Christmas included a trip to where else? Anthropologie, of course! She had Christmas money to spend!

New Year's Eve was spent at home. I made one of our favorite dishes..Chicken & Dumplings. Jenna made a Bailey's Cheese Cake and we played Scrabble. I can't think of a better way to spend New Year's Eve!

It was Far From Calm....

on Christmas Eve. It was more like All Is Smoky at our house on Christmas Eve. We had a little "kitchen disaster" that actually, could have turned out to be much worse. We were all at my Mom's house which is next door to our home. She needed an extra oven for baking the dinner so Jenna ran home to turn ours on to preheat. Well....a few minutes went by and the alarm company called my Mom's to tell us that our fire alarm was sounding..No, Nancy wasn't cooking again. She was standing mext to Mom when the call came in! In a matter of seconds, we heard the firetruck and we ran as fast as we could back to our house, which was filled with smoke, but no fire, thank God! We got the dogs out quickly, they were a little shaken, but fine. Lesson of the day. Do not turn on an oven and leave the house, especially if you used it the day before and someone forgot to clean what dripped onto the oven base!

Other than that, we had a perfect day with the family. Lots of laughs, food and good times. Pictures coming soon and no, I didn't take any of our disaster. That was the last thing on my mind. This is one Christmas Eve we will not soon forget!

A Gnome For Your Pocket

I discovered these sweet little pocket gnomes one night as I was making the rounds on etsy. Isn't Etsy a wonderful place? Each one is handmade of wool and felt in Australia. I placed an order for the store and received them in plenty of time for the holidays. As you can see, each one has a hand stitched on their belly..so cute that it's hard to choose a favorite!

One of our favorite customers came in today to purchase 2 of these little guys for her kids stocking. I just have to share with you what she said she will tell them. She will tell the children that when it's time to go to bed, give all your worries and cares of the day to your little gnome friend. Then place him under your pillow and he will take all your cares away while you sleep. That just melts my heart!

Matilda's Mouse Barn Sale

We finally made it up to Matilda's Mouse, and I must say. It was SO worth the 45 minute drive. Heck, I would have driven 2 hours plus to see it all...maybe even just to see Matilda's sweet face.

From the minute we drove through the gated entrance, we let out a collective sigh as we scanned the old Betty Crocker estate. Kandi quickly announced she would trade her Coronado beach house for this place! As we entered the barn doors, Matilda..the perfect little angel, was perched on a turquoise throne. Matilda is the official greeter, and today she was wearing angel wings and a halo. She was even more adorable as I had imagined she'd be, and really didn't seem to care that everyone was cooing and making over her. She's used to it. :) Matilda must think that everyone comes to see her, not the barn FULL of treasures!
So on to the treasure trove inside the barn. I wish I had taken more pictures, but I will be sharing the items and vignettes that tickled my fancy.

I wanted so many things, but like most of the collectors reading this, we really don't NEED a thing, so we look and try to imagine how we would fit just one more thing in our home...or store.

What we did come away with was a charming little column that will be perfect at the end of our shop counter. It will be a jewelry stand once we have a more secure base attached so it won't tip. I picked up a cute burlap table runner, trimmed in lace and a darling headband which will be tucked into my girl's stocking. That was all I left with for myself, BUT it could have been much more! I wanted so many things, and I am looking forward to the next sale. upcoming sales. Nobody can put a show on these gals at Matilda's, so don't miss out on future events.

So we packed up our goods...the birdcage stand and column barely fit. Shall we rent a U-Haul next time girls? Photos are on the way so check back soon!

A Girl & Her Coat

This has been Jenna's favorite coat for the past two years. It has kept her warm on trips to San Francisco, and many trips to LA. She even wears it when she doesn't even need a coat! She loves it that much. A few weeks ago, I arrived home to find her in tears. She had washed the coat in cold water AND she put it in the dryer, on delicate. The coat is wool..what was she thinking? All she could manage to blurt out as she handed it off to me was that she tried to stretch it back but it wasn't working.
So I spent the next 30 minutes trying to stretch it every which way and I actually think I got it back to an XXXXX Small. So the next few days were spent on eBay, searching for the elusive Anthropologie Flower Field coat. Much to my surprise, she found 3, all of which had been snapped up with Buy It Now. I told her to be patient...another would surely appear... seasoned eBay veterans KNOW these these! `o) And the very next day when I heard a scream from her room, I knew. I made the purchase with Buy It Now, but she paid every penny of it herself. I'm 99.9% certain that this one won't be going into the washer.

A Slow Start

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...everywhere except our house! I'm getting a slow start on decorating our house this year, although Jenna managed to put up her cute little pink aluminum tree in her bedroom today. She borrowed some of my favorite ornies, but that's okay. I am just glad someone is appreciating them! I guess when you have a store to decorate, you can suffer burn out...at least I did! Here are a few shots of the store in holiday mode...

We filled an old birdbath with vintage ornaments...after Christmas it will hold seashells!

Everyone loves these little guys..we only have a couple left.

We have a woodland theme this year, filled with gnomes, forest friends and vintage elves.

Our vintage trellis is so pretty at night. We look forward to lighting it up at dusk. I hope everyone is staying warm and toasty during this season. Even though we've experienced some cold nights, I won't complain one bit about the weather in Southern Calif!

Tomorrow I will be taking a road trip to the Matilda's Mouse event with the girls. I have been wanting to make this trip for quite some time, and I can hardly wait to meet Matilda!

I Can't Believe I Found The Time...

to add a few things to the online store! It's been a busy month, and it's just about to get busier! I will most likely be taking a break from blogging here, but may continue on the store blog over the next couple of weeks. I know we are all in the same boat with trying to plan for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even though I'm not hosting the big dinners or any company..whew!.. I still have just enough going on to make my head spin. Besides being a shop owner, (where I am at at least 3 days a week), I spend much of my FREE time searching for store merchandise, trying to keep up this blog and the shop blog, a website that I had planned to update weekly, planning the Open House for the store on Dec 4th and a Craft Fair on the 5th, coordinating ads for the local newspaper for the store, and conducting an estate sale with my 2 partners the Saturday after Thanksgiving! So this blog, Facebook and Twitter will go on the back burner for a time, and I will update the store blog once a week. But enough about ME...what are your plans for the next 6 weeks? `o)

Cooking For The Queen

Does anyone out there prepare home cooked meals for their pooches? I started about a month ago, after our Pug was diagnosed with Pancreatitis. I will spare you the details, but we had to rush her to the vet last month. After a 14 day round of antibiotics, 4 days of an IV, and a new diet of turkey, sweet potato and pumpkin, she is as good as new! In fact, she has more energy than before, and her coat even feels healthier. I've also added apples, carrots, green beans and eggs for added nutrition, although I've read that they still need added vitamins, namely calcium. The vet said she can stay on this diet or I can slowly switch to a Low Fat Duck & Potato Low Fat food that should be easily digested. Just wondering if anyone has any tips on making a nutritious food for their pets. I make up 3-4 days worth of meals in advance which makes it easier, but am considering doing 1-2 weeks worth and freezing it. My husband jokingly claims that I cook more for the dog than him...this very well may be true, my dear!

At The Rose Bowl...

This beautiful curvy chest was embellished with seashells. I think it would have been just as gorgeous without! This space was loaded with soldered seashell bottles, and her booth was set up as beautiful as a store!

Jenna's heart always goes pitter patter when she sees a pretty prom dress.

Lots of dress forms to be found, but I didn't see any bargains. This one was $250-

As soon as I saw this, my first thought was sitting my pug on the top bench, in her bikini of course..and Ivan the Lhasa Apso in the drivers seat wearing his muscle man tee. Heehee....I was so tempted to get this for our store summer window...and I can't stop thinking about it! I didn't really photograph my finds of the day, but I purchased some vintage Christmas, an old store stand to display necklaces on, some old butter knives and a cutie patootie cement deer that is pictured on my store blog. Jenna came away with one vintage dress, a vintage snowman ornament, a little dog hand puppet that looked like our Ivan and a cute Hostess apron with a squirrel on the front.

We all met under the umbrella at noon, to share a lunch and our finds of the day.

The Real Treasures From The Rose Bowl

The Rose Bowl trip was fantastic, and although I didn't bring home any great treasures..I came away with something better...I met some wonderful people with huge hearts.

We met up at 9am in front of the entrance for this group picture. Not everyone is pictured, but I will upload another at the end of the shopping day.

My daughter is in the front row, from left #2 and I am #4.

We were each handed a goodie box filled with sweets and a darling hand made necklace from Jenny. After a few pictures, we were off to shop. Not many bargains to be had, but we got our exercise! Since we actually started at 7am, we had already walked 2 hours before starting out yet again for another three. We met up at Noon for lunch, show and tell and lots of chit chat. Then we headed out to hit just a few more rows and with tired feet, Jenna and I surrendered at 1:30. Thank you to Heather, Jenny , Pam and Amy for your gifts and time in preparing for this event.

I have been so busy with the store that I have not uploaded any photos. I promise to have them by the weekend..

Brocante Carnival At The Rose Bowl

I'm planning a little road trip with the Attic Girls this coming weekend. We are headed to Pasadena, home of the famous Rose Bowl flea market! It's been 2 years since my last visit, and I'm so excited! I will be meeting Heather and friends at 9am Sunday morning for the Brocante Carnival! I'm looking forward to meeting Heather and the girls. Heather's blog was the very first blog I read and I've been hooked on blogs ever since. After a morning of shopping, we will take a break at noon and have a little show and tell with our favorite finds. Should be a fun day, with perfect weather. This will be a busy week for me, so my next post will be after I return. Hope to share some treasures with you next week...off to dress up my shopping cart. The word on the street is that they are going to award prizes for flea market apron, tote bag and cart. :)

Vintage Vixen with Paris Montana & More!

Last weekend, Jane and I took some time out for a little shopping as we attended the Vintage Vixen sale in Eastlake. This event was to raise money for the the Breast Cancer 3 day Walk. After we parked, Jane and I made our way down the sidewalk and as we came around the corner, we both giggled..it was so stinkin CUTE! A vintage silver airstream with umbrellas and tables of jewels!

Heidi of Paris Montana came out to greet us in the most beautiful dress, cowgirl boots and jewels. I just could not get over her little trailer and I think The Attic Girls need one of those trailers! :)
Her designs were beautiful so check her schedule to see if she's rolling into a show near you!

I was unable to photograph all the vendors, but everyone had such nice displays and all for a great cause.

The sale took place in the front courtyard of the house and in the back yard. Perfect layout for a sale! We saw the girls from La Maison Rustique & Glamarella Junk.

Gina of Lizzy B's had a lovely display of bubble charms with old maps inside!

Okay..Celia. YOU need to get a BLOGSPOT!!! I wanted it all, but settled for a statue to use as a store display, a necklace and 2 bracelets. I have received numerous compliments on my necklace each time I wear it, and I have probably worn it 5 days this week. Thank you sweet Celia! Now that I know we are practically neighbors, I might be knocking on your door for some of that sweet jewelry!

Anthropologie..Nobody Does It Better

I was at our local Anthropologie store last evening, and as we were completing our purchase, we were making small talk with the associate. I asked her how much time is spent on a window display and how many stores they take on in the area. That's when she told us that the side window was just completed today and it was a must see, so we went outside to check it out. It was done with all recyclable plastics and it took the artist over a week to complete. It would have taken me 6 months!
*EDIT* I made a trip back during the day to take a closer look. Besides plastic water bottles, I saw lots of clear plastic forks, styrofoam peanuts, the plastic that holds the 6 pack aluminum cans together and plastic drinking cups. I'm sure there is more, but that was all that I recognized. :)

I only wish I had a better camera because these pictures do not do justice to this fabulous window. The longer we studied it up close, the more familiar the plastics became to us. Their displays are so intriguing.

I also admired a wall inside the store that was covered in random strips of old wallpaper. It was a mishmosh of 6 or 8 different patterns of paper stapled to the wall. Random pieces were torn and pulled away from the wall. I really loved the look and thought to myself...I could easily tackle something like this..if I could bring myself to tearing up some beautiful old wallpaper.

Whenever I enter Anthro, I always head towards the candles and perfumes. I got my fix with a Coconut Ice Cream scented candle that smells good enough to eat. My candle was 50% off. :) I got away cheap tonight! Jenna got her fix in the coat department...now she's broke. I kid..Ahhh, to be young with no mortgage, no bills and money to burn! I told her she should be working there to get the 40% off discount. She said no, because she would never have a paycheck. :(

... I walked down these steps to marry my sweetheart. We stood in front of family and friends in front of a Wishing Well covered in white roses. I think my Dad was more nervous on that walk than I was. And the groom? He was so nervous that he spilled a soda on his lap an hour before the ceremony. 20 years of marriage and 3 years of courting before that, and he still makes me laugh. I've often told him that's the only reason I keep him around...hee hee.

It was sold, and I have no idea on what amount it sold for, but have you ever seen a piece with a carved face like this? All I could think about was how much fun this piece would have been for our store Fall/Halloween display.

LT. Dan Cnossen

I received an email this morning, about LT. Dan Cnossen, a Navy Seal from Coronado,Ca. Dan was leading his Coronado based SEAL Team in Afghanistan earlier this month when he stepped on an IED. Miraculously he is now alive and fighting in the ICU in Maryland. You can read Dan's story by clicking HERE. Your support/prayers would be much appreciated.

"We've heard that people are praying for Dan all over the country and world - and you cannot imagine how powerful this is to us and to him. Last week, the local Coronado paper had a pet photo contest, and of course I had to enter Ms. Sophie! She didn't win 1st place (and I still have not told her), but she was featured in the collage of the other entrants with her photo wearing the crown. :)

The Many Faces Of...

In case you can't tell by this post, this little guy makes me nuts. He has stolen my heart and has me wrapped around his paw.

When we first rescued him, he was pretty hairy. Once we started taking him to the groomer, he seemed much happier!

And I discovered her had the prettiest big brown eyes I ever met.

He bites on his tongue when he sleeps....this kills me!

..and foams at the mouth when he rides in the car. He's a nervous type.

This last picture gets a laugh out of me every time I look at it. He had just finished playing with our pug and was rubbing his face all over a blanket. When he raised his head up, I happened to have a camera nearby and took this as quickly as I could because I knew his hair would not stay this way.

Strange But True

I was looking through my picture folder and came across this one that was from a newspaper article a few years back. I immediately recognized the palm trees and house as my Mom's house, but who was this guy standing in front of it? He's the guy behind the book THE LARGEST U.S. CITIES NAMED AFTER A FOOD and Other Mind-Boggling Geography Lists from Around the World. Okay, so maybe it's not a book that's on everyone's shelf, but if I saw it at a yard sale for a quarter, I may just pick it up. :)

There is a chapter in the book...Weird Street Names. It seems that our little street made the list. Whenever I have to fill out something with our address, or tell someone our street name, I ALWAYS get a reaction. Some start singing ..."I did it myyyy way...", some may snicker, some actually ask if it's REALLY my street name? As if I would make that up? hahaha....
After reading through the other street names, I think I would rather live on My Way. Here are just a few to make you giggle.

How Do You Say Goodbye...

...to someone you grew up, and have been neighbors since you were a child? This is my friend Barbara.

I probably spent more time at her house as a child, than my own! They had the neighborhood pool and her parents also owned the neighborhood market. Hellooooo...I'm talking penny candy, ice cream..but best of all? Her Mom's roast dinner every Sunday. I don't think I missed more than one of those Sunday dinners in a month. We SHE had every Barbie doll imaginable and we built an entire Barbieville on the side of her house, in the dirt. Complete with a lake, camp ground and store for Barbie and friends. Those were the days my friend. And she is taking her collection of Barbies with her..isn't that cute? :)

Barbara lost her dear Mother earlier this year, and has decided to make a new start in Cedar City, Utah where they purchased a home a few years back for their future retirement. We will keep in touch through the blog as I am demanding she start one of her own. I have to keep tabs on you Barb!

Can't forget the WII.

So back to my question...
how DO you say goodbye to a life long buddy?
It wasn't easy, but this is how we did it.

With a girl's breakfast out at a local 50's diner...
After all..we are 50's babes now. Followed by a A quick little shopping trip...

..and one last hug for the road. I have a feeling she won't be gone long.
We will see each other again real soon, I'm sure.

Brownies With A Secret Ingredient

My daughter loves to bake and is always trying out new recipes, but when she told me she wanted to make these gluten free brownies with a secret ingredient...well, I almost barfed.
So off to market we went to the gather her ingredients for the brownies. She was going to borrow Grandma's food processor until we looked at it and discovered it was probably the first one ever invented....and not even sure if it still worked? Okay, so it wasn't as old as this, but just wanted to show you how far we have come.

So we made a trip to the store to look at food processors since she has been wanting one forever. We had a 20% off store coupon and were pleasantly surprised to see an additional 20- mail in rebate. It was our lucky day. She must have really wanted it in a bad way since she made the purchase with her own hard earned money. :)

So now we are back home and she's ready to get this thing going.
Her bee-utiful new black processor is ready for work. It's a dream!

Don't forget the BEANS! shhhh.... It's the SECRET ingredient.

And here they are, just out of the oven...

We placed them in the frig overnight because she had read they are better when chilled. We just had them today and I can honestly say that they were GREAT!

They have a very smooth texture , almost like fudge. I'm glad she loaded them with walnuts because I'm not so sure they would be as yummy without. If you decide to make these, don't tell anyone about the secret ingredient. Let them try it first, get their reaction and tell them when they are finished. Just click HERE for the recipe.
